Stone
Monkey + Indian Face DVD - released March 2006
Stone Monkey (25
mins): Dynamic movement is the theme of this exciting portrayal of one of
Britain's best young climbers. From anarchic schoolboy to
internationally-renowned climber, the film covers aspects of Johnny Dawes' life
in a mixture of semi-surreal images, documentary-style voice overs and
carefully selected cool tunes. The film epitomises what makes him unique and
documents some of Johnny's unrepeated routes on the Derbyshire gritstone edges
and the spectacular Quarryman Groove in Wales. This is the version with the
original soundtrack - Zappa etc. as on Channel 4
Indian Face (30 mins): Pieced together here is the story of what has been, for twenty years, Britain's hardest adverture climb- The Indian Face (E9,6c) on Clogwyn Du'r Arddu. Included is footage of Johnny Dawes repeating the crux section of Indian Face during the first ascent of West Indian Face in 1988. The saga of the original climb is narrated by Jim Perrin, with contributions from Joe Brown, John Redhead, Nick Dixon and Johnny himself. Other chapters in the DVD include Johnny's rants and his alternative commentary on Stone Monkey |

The Indian Face is one of the most hallowed tales in British climbing. The line

Slates These holds reflect Johnny's distinctive and individual approach to climbing movement. Reminiscent of quarried slate these complex edges and slopers vary in size and depth and have been carefully structured to emphasise the use of subtle body positioning and balance as well as finger strength. |
